When it comes to your face, there are certainly things that you can do to help combat aging. The trick is starting early and staying consistent. We all know that our bodies change as we get older, and our skin care regimen should adjust to those changes. The things one might do in their twenties, are not the same as they would do in their forties or fifties. Here are some of my suggestions as to how you should be taking care of your face through the decades.
20s and Younger: Preventative
At this age, your skin routine should be all about preserving the great skin you have and preventing it from showing signs of aging in the future. The best way to keep aging signs at bay is to protect your skin from the sun. I suggest finding a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least 30 SPF and incorporate applying it into your morning routine every single day, as well as reapplying it throughout the day. This will help prevent discoloration, wrinkles, and skin cancer. The 20s are also a time when you should be keeping up with an at home skin-care regimen, including daily cleansing and moisturizing, and routine exfoliating to keep acne away and rejuvenate the skin. High quality products that are rich in growth factors and are pH balanced for better absorption should not be skimped on.
30s: Non-Invasive Treatments
Your 30s are a good time to start getting medical spa treatments such as facials, light chemical peels, microdermabrasion or dermaplaning. I also suggest starting intense pulsed light treatments, which can be customized to target your specific concerns such as fine wrinkles or discoloration. Just like you should do in your 20s, you should also be keeping up with your own at-home skin care regimen, but now boosting up moisturizer and perhaps incorporating a retinol-based product that will help firm your skin.
40s: More Intense Treatments
Wrinkles and sagging skin is common for people in their forties. To combat these issues, I suggest trying BOTOX® injections or dermal fillers. If you’re more concerned about discoloration, uneven skin tone, or fine lines, then laser and light treatments and skin tightening treatments are great options. This may also be a good time to go to see your favorite plastic surgeon for prescription-strength retinoids and other at-home products such as serums and creams containing vitamins and antioxidants.
50s and Beyond: Plastic Surgery?
By the time they hit their fifties, sixties and seventies, many men and women begin to consider plastic surgery as an option for turning back the hands of time. Face lifts, brow lifts, eyelid surgery and neck lifts are the options people in this age group begin to explore. While plastic surgery can certainly make a tremendous difference in rejuvenating the face, it’s still extremely important to continue with a skin care regimen of cleansing, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
