Once your breast augmentation is completed, there are many things to consider to help with the healing process. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding post-surgery recovery.
How long does it take for breast implants to settle?
Most implants will settle within 3-6 months. I’ve seen some settle as early as one month, and others that have taken up to a year. Eventually, the swelling does go down and the breasts fall naturally into place.
What types of sensory changes occur after breast augmentation?
There are some instances when sensory changes may occur on the skin of the breast and/or the area of the areola and nipple. The most common situations are temporary and may only last a few days. Some of my patients have found decreased sensation in certain areas of their breasts, while others find their breasts to become hyper-sensitive to the touch. In a majority of cases, these issues have resolved over time (within a few weeks to a few months).
When can I begin exercising again?
Patients should wait 3 weeks or 21 days before resuming any type of workout routine. It’s always best to start slowly and avoid lifting heavy weights right after you have been cleared by your surgeon for these activities. Working out after this period of time will not alter your result or harm the breast implant.
How quickly can I return to work?
Most women return to work after 3-5 days. If the job requires use of the arms and/or more physical exertion, I usually suggest requesting additional time off or, at least, requesting “light duty.”
Can women with breast implants have mammograms?
Yes. In advance, I recommend that you find out whether or not the person performing the mammogram has experience in doing so on women with breast implants. Because of the implants, extra views may be required to completely assess the breast and to do an adequate screening.
