Although it may not be talked about, more men are considering plastic surgery to improve their appearance or to feel better about themselves. In our practice, it is not uncommon for men to ask about face and body procedures. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the following were the most common procedures for men in 2012:
Surgical Procedures
- Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
Just like women, men have concerns about the appearance of their nose. Whether it has a hump on the top, or is crooked due to an accident, rhinoplasty can reshape the nose to a more proportional size and shape to match the face. - Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Tired and droopy upper eyelids are common as men hit their 40’s and 50’s. The lower eyelids can start getting puffy and form “bags”. In both cases, a blepharoplasty can soften the changes that come with aging and given men a more youthful and less tired appearance. - Liposuction
When a proper diet and exercise don’t get rid of problem areas, men commonly ask for fat removal from the abdomen, “love handles”, chest, under the chin and neck. In most cases, there is little downtime after liposuction and men can return to work in a few days and to regular exercise in 2 weeks. - Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
In teenagers, prominent breast tissue is common and usually resolves by the late teens. However, if it persists or causes pain, then correction with liposuction or excision of the breast tissue can result in a more masculine chest. In older men, or in men who lost much weight, the loose skin can also be removed. - Facelift
Time and gravity can pull down a man’s facial skin resulting in jowls and a full neck. Just as for women, a face and neck lift can restore a younger appearance.
Nonsurgical Procedures
- BOTOX®
Facial lines and wrinkles can be softened with regular injections of BOTOX®, Dysport or Xemoin. Many men prefer to leave some lines or wrinkles to appear more natural, so our skilled nurse injectors make sure each patient gets individualized treatment to match their needs. - Laser Hair Removal
Many men have unwanted body hair. After a course of hair removal treatments with our advanced lasers, men feel more comfortable without a shirt. - Microdermabrasion
Using very fine crystals, the top layer of skin can be removed to give a more smooth and youthful texture. Regular treatments can improve fine lines and wrinkles. - Chemical Peel
Proper skin care starts with sun protection and skin treatments to exfoliate the top layer of skin, soften age spots, and repair collagen. Regular chemical peel treatments can reverse the early signs of skin aging and improve fine lines and wrinkles, leaving younger appearing facial skin. - Soft Tissue Filler
Deeper facial lines can be improved with injections of Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, Restylane®, Perlane®, Artefill, or Sculptra®. By offering a broad range of products, we can customize the treatment to each patient’s unique facial features.
For many men, the biggest obstacle to considering an improvement is not knowing what can be done. We see our female patients bring their husbands in for consultations after seeing the results they had themselves. Knowing what is possible, and what isn’t, can be best achieved by a consultation with an experienced Board Certified plastic surgeon.
