The Life Cycle of Skin
Skin covers and protects the entire body. It is essential for maintaining life and plays an important role in appearance too. Beautiful skin is bright, radiant, and healthy. When your skin looks great, the rest of you does too.
The skin is made up of layers, the outermost portion of the skin is called the epidermis. The epidermis is the thin, outer layer of skin. It’s the part of the skin that first comes to mind when you think of skin.
The outer layer of the epidermis is where skin cells go to die. After your skin has finished its job, these old cells flake or are washed off and are replaced by new skin, created at a deeper level in the epidermis. The skin is constantly rotating through the life cycle of a skin cell. The new skin is made, it rises to the surface, it dies and flakes off where it is replaced by new skin.
Skin Cell Build Up and What You Can Do About It
Sometimes dead and damaged skin cells build up, hiding the healthy new skin underneath. We offer several resurfacing treatments at MAE Plastic Surgery including chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and, one of our favorites, dermaplaning. Learn how this simple and effective treatment can help you ditch old damaged cells for healthy new skin.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a type of controlled scraping that manually removes the outer layers of the skin. A sharp, surgical blade is used to scrape off the top layers of skin, refinishing the skin for a brighter, smoother appearance. In addition to removing dead skin cells, dermaplaning also removes dirt, oil, and peach fuzz. It can be performed on its own, paired with a facial, or performed prior to other cosmetic treatments, like a chemical peel or an enzyme mask. Removing dead skin, dirt, and oil prior to an aesthetic treatment can allow for better penetration and enhanced results.
We love that dermaplaning offers effective results without chemicals, downtime, or an invasive treatment. Our patients love the results they see after treatment.
Dermaplaning sounds like a simple procedure, but this isn’t a treatment to DIY. The blade we use is very sharp and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can damage the skin. Additionally, it is important to perform this treatment in a controlled, clean environment to avoid contaminating the skin and causing infections. Our licensed aestheticians are trained dermaplaning providers and use industry best practices to ensure a safe and effective treatment.
