What’s the right age for rhinoplasty? Dr. Epstein regularly performs rhinoplasty surgery on teens as well as patients in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond. If you’re thinking about rhinoplasty, come see us. We can discuss your options, make treatment recommendations, and help you decide if you’re ready for surgery.
Teenage Rhinoplasty- How Young Is Too Young?
Many teens want rhinoplasty to correct aesthetic and functional issues with their nose. Rhinoplasty can remove humps and bumps, correct asymmetry, resize the nose, and improve nasal function. Often, rhinoplasty changes the entire appearance of the face by bringing features into better balance.
We recommend that teens wait until their nose has reached its full adult size before considering cosmetic rhinoplasty. Girls are typically physically ready for rhinoplasty sooner than boys.
- Girls– Rhinoplasty can be performed starting at 15-16 years old.
- Boys– Rhinoplasty can be performed starting at 16-17 years old.
Are You Emotionally Ready for Rhinoplasty?
Age is just one consideration in determining if a teen is ready for rhinoplasty. It is also important to be emotionally ready for surgery. Here are some factors to consider:
- Do You Have Realistic Expectations?– Rhinoplasty will transform your appearance, but it won’t change your life. You’ll still have good days and bad days. The procedure won’t change your friends or improve your grades. Rhinoplasty only changes the appearance of the nose.
- Are You Ready for Recovery?– Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure and requires a recovery period. You’ll need to miss a week or two from school or have the surgery over the summer. Contact sports will need to be avoided for several months. Teens that play football, basketball, and other sports may want to wait until they are a little older to pursue rhinoplasty. It is important to commit to the recovery process to maintain your results and avoid complications.
Teenage Rhinoplasty Requires Collaboration from Parents, the Teen, and the Surgeon
Getting rhinoplasty as a teen can be a wonderful opportunity to improve your look and boost confidence. The best results require extensive collaboration. Dr. Epstein will work closely with the teen and their parents. This isn’t a decision you can make alone.
