Breast augmentation may be one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many of the things that you’ve heard about breast augmentation are actually myths, not based in fact. Today we’ll debunk some of the top breast augmentation myths and show you the truth about this misunderstood procedure. If you have other questions about the procedure that you don’t see answered here, call and schedule a consultation with us. We’re happy to answer any breast augmentation questions you may have.
Breast Augmentation Myth #1- Breast Augmentation Is Only for Women with Small Breasts
Breast augmentation is customized to you. We can use this procedure to increase your breast size, to correct asymmetry, and even to restore lost breast volume after pregnancy. It can enhance the size or the shape of your breasts. Our breast augmentation patients come to us with natural breasts of every shape and size. If you want to transform your breasts, breast augmentation may be the solution.
Breast Augmentation Myth #2- You Can’t Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation
Many women delay their breast augmentation until after they’ve finished bearing children because they have heard that you cannot breastfeed after breast augmentation. The truth is, many women successfully breastfeed with implants. If you plan on future children and hope to breastfeed, let us know. Some incision types and implant placements are more conducive to future breastfeeding.
Breast Augmentation Myth #3- Breasts with Implants Don’t Sag
Implants or not, the sad reality is, breasts sag. Even after your implants you may still experience some breast sagging. If you already have sagging, breast implants alone won’t correct the problem. For our patients with sagging we offer a breast lift. A breast lift can be performed on its own, at the same time as breast augmentation, or after breast augmentation.
Breast Augmentation Myth #4- You Need to Replace Your Breast Implants Every 10 Years
Years ago the standard recommendation was to replace breast implants every 10 years. Since then, implants have gotten stronger and often last for many years without a leak. Typically we recommend replacing your implants only when needed. Good reasons for replacement include a leak/rupture, desire to change breast size, and capsular contracture. Implant replacement will be necessary at times, but it isn’t on a set 10-year schedule.
