What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast Augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States today and one of the most popular surgical procedures that Dr. Epstein performs. It is a surgical procedure that can enhance the size and shape of your breasts using artificial implants in order to create a larger, fuller and shapelier chest. Breast augmentation in Chicago helps balance a women’s figure, improve symmetry and enhance a women’s self-confidence and self-image. This is also an excellent procedure to restore breast volume that has been lost after weight reduction, or pregnancy, as well as for reconstructive purposes.
During your consultation, Dr. Epstein will discuss the various implants available including size, shape and type of implant (saline vs. gel). Breast augmentation does not correct sagging breasts, but combined with a Mastopexy (breast lift) you can enhance the fullness of the breast while also improving the shape and position.
How is a Breast Augmentation performed?
Breast Augmentation is an outpatient surgical procedure performed at our facility, Northbrook Plastic Surgery. An incision is placed near the crease of the breast, around the edge of the areola, or in the underarm area. This will be determined based on the type of implant, the degree of enlargement, the patient’s anatomy and patient/surgeon’s preference (Dr. Epstein will discuss all options with you).
Once the incisions are made a pocket is created behind the breast tissue (submammary) or beneath the pectoral muscle and on top of the chest wall (submuscular). The implant is securely positioned in the pocket and small sutures are used to close the incision site. The procedure takes approximately 2 hours.
What to expect during the recovery period:
- Mild bruising and swelling is normal after surgery and will subside within 1-2 weeks
- Minor discomfort, tenderness, and sensitivity are to be expected, all of which are easily controlled with medication.
- A post-surgical sports bra will be worn at all times for the first 2 weeks following surgery
- Return to light activity within 2 days post-surgery or as you feel ready
- Most patients return to work within the first week after surgery
- Full physical activity may resume 3 weeks after surgery
- Incision lines will continue to heal and refine for 1-year post-surgery.
